Back to Work

Well....we have survived the last 3 days. They were long days for me and the kids, but we have survived. Wednesday was my first day back to work in about 6 months due to summer break and my maternity leave so I had a lot of adjusting to do.

The past three days have been a challenge at work because I have felt like a sub in my own classroom. Each day got better and I think I am settled back in to the routine of things. Today was crazy. The electric went out for about an hour this morning so the kids were wound up about that, but we made life sized Santa to hold their Letters to Santa for the hallway so I think that helped to add to their holiday spirit. I have a really good class this year, with 22 energetic, creative and humorous first graders.

Some of my favorite quotes of the week include:

"But Mrs. Ruwe...it's the first snow....I just can't stop looking at the snow." (This came after I asked a student to sit down in her seat because I couldn't keep her away from the window on Wednesday.)

"Mrs. Ruwe you are so creative." (This made me feel good, but I don't really what I did to be called creative."

Did you know that mistletoe is "something that you shoot out of a big gun?" Or "something that you stand under with someone and I'm not allowed to tell you what you do under it." And then another student piped up and said, "Oh, yeah my mom and dad kiss under it." (This conversation started with me asking the class if they knew what mistletoe was before we started reading a book that made a play on the word mistletoe.

This is only my top three quotes from the past three days....you just never know what you are going to get in the first grade. This is the best part about my job...the one liners that the kids drop that they don't even know they are one liners.

Maddie and Liam are adjusting well. They both are behaving and napping well for grandma and Chris.

Only 2 and a half weeks until Christmas break!

  2. Joe loves your class. I can't imagine all the things that you hear throughout the day, I crack up all the time with just one first grader at home!
